Kids Scooter Reviews – What Kinds Of Scooter Can You Get For Kids ?

When it comes to kids scooters, there seem to be two main companies that make them. These are Razor and Radio Flyer. Radio Flyer are probably best known for the tricycles and pedal vehicles for young children and to this extent their scooters seem to be aimed at the younger children. On the other hand, Razor appeal to young and old. In fact many of their scooters, especially the motorized versions are just as popular with adults and kids alike. This article on kids scooter reviews will run through a few of the top scooters offered by these companies and touch on a few other companies that make scooters for kids.

Let's start with Razor scooters.

Razor seem to totally dominate the kids scooter market these days. This is pretty good going considering that the company has only been around for 10 years.  The reason for this heady rise is probably their break through product – the kick scooter.  This scooter took off in the early 2000s and to this day I'm not really sure why it became so popular. It's a cross between a bicycle and a skateboard I guess and you might say that this new twist on the skateboard explained it's popularity. It's like riding a skateboard but a lot easier.

The Kick scooter is basically a 2 wheel scooter with deck and control column. The control column is essentially like handle bars on a bicycle. The deck is where the rider places his/her feet and thus rides it like a skateboard. A rear fender protects the rider's legs from the moving back wheel and any debris that might be thrown up by it. It also acts as a brake. The rider simply steps on the fender to slow the wheel down and bring the machine to a halt.

The kick scooter is made of an aircraft grade aluminum that is light which makes it ideal for kids to ride and carry around with them. Plus the handle bars or control column can be folded down to make it even easier to carry around. The scooter is very easy to put together too which appeals to parents and kids alike.

The Kick scooter is powered by a kick or push of the foot. The small hard wheels make it great for riding on smooth surfaces. The Kick is the flagship product by Razor and has lead to many upgrades and modifications. In fact you can get the A, A2, A3 and A5 Lux. There are even more versions of the original kick that have various detailing or feature designs to make them stand out.

For instance, you can get the Sweet Pea and Hello Kitty detailed kick scooters that are aimed at girls. They are essentially the same kick scooter but have a pink color scheme and detailing that might appeal to a girl. The Hello Kitty version has the bobtail kitten on the control column and the deck of the machine. For more information on the Razor kick scooters and other Razor scooters click the links.

Radio Flyer Scooters

I'm not sure which came first between the Razor kick scooter and the Radio Flyer Style n Ride and RFZ scooters. They look pretty much the same in design and shape. The main difference between the 2 is that the Style n Ride and RFZ scooters come with clips that you can attach to the steering column. These clips can be decorated with supplied sticker or any kind of sticker really. The clips are made from plastic and the stickers can be taken off when the child gets sick of them. You can place up to 10 clips on the steering column, hence customizing your scooter however you want.

Other than that the scooter look pretty much the same. With this said, the Radio Flyer Scooters seem a bit more expensive than the basic kick scooter but similar in price to the special versions, like the Sweet Pea.

Other Radio Flyer scooters are the my 1st Scooter, which as the name suggests is aimed at young kids and toddlers. This is a three wheel scooter with handle bar steering. The front has two big wheels to make the machine more sturdy and easier to ride of young children, much like a tricycle makes it easier for them to learn how to ride a bike.

The Radio Flyer scooter aimed at older kids is the Smooth Rider. This is a classic two wheel scooter with adjustable steering column/handle bars. The deck is wider than the standard scooters like the kick and is made from wood. The wheels are also bigger and have rubber tread wheels. This scooter  also has a rear foot brake that you step on and a hand brake on the handlebars that can be applied  instead of the rear brake.

Certainly Razor have the lions share of variety when it comes to scooters but Radio Flyer offer some nice models too, especially for younger children. Other companies that make scooter for kids include  Fuzion and even Trikke to some extent but these machines are probably more for adults.
